Woman accused of online auction scam

CHARLESTON, W.VA. -- A Charleston woman is facing felony charges after she was accused of swindling a man in an online auction.

The state Attorney General's office contacted State Police after receiving a complaint from a South Carolina man over a failed transaction on the auction Web site eBay.

William Reichard, of Lugoff, S.C., told authorities he had tried to buy a 52-inch Samsung HDTV from the woman on eBay, but after sending his money he never received the television, according to a complaint filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court.

Corporal P.J. Mooney, who began his investigation June 22, found that Kelly Laruth Watson, 25, of Amity Drive had advertised the TV on the online auction site Dec. 1, the complaint said.

Reichard tried to negotiate with Watson to end the auction early and to buy the television for $1,600, according to the complaint.

Reichard told troopers he agreed to pay the woman through PayPal, an online payment service, the complaint said. Watson allegedly withdrew the funds for the television from her PayPal account and then closed the account, along with her eBay account, State Police said.

Reichard told police he never received his television set and was never refunded the $1,600, according to the complaint.
